High blood pressure traditionally meant you should worry about your blood pressure if it reaches 140 on top or 90 on bottom.
The American Heart Association announced there is a new guideline. If your blood pressure is 130 on top and 80 on bottom, you’re not considered as having high blood pressure.
This change is meant to help people take an earlier treatment approach to overcoming their high blood pressure. By attacking the issue sooner, experts believe they can help more people avoid problems such as heart disease and strokes and heart attacks.
Experts will now begin recommending treatment earlier on in hopes of helping people avoid the serious problems linked to high blood pressure. Treatment should also begin with lifestyle or behavioral changes such as changes to the diet and activity levels.
The new guidelines show more than 130 million Americans fall in to the high blood pressure category.
