It is true that alcohol can be both good and bad for your health. In terms of your blood pressure, alcohol can lower it if consumed in small amounts. However, drinking more than one to two drinks a day will potentially harm your body, rather than benefit your blood pressure reading. In fact, the opposite will occur, and your blood pressure will rise by several points. Furthermore, drinking too much can reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medicines. Three things to consider about drinking and blood pressure:
Keep track of your drinking. Cut yourself off when you’ve had more than the suggested amounts.
Try tapering off. If you’re a heavy drinker, suddenly not drinking at all can cause severe high blood pressure for a number of days. So, slowly decrease the amount you drink for a few weeks.
