Are you feeling tired? Could it be blood pressure? Learn about the connection between your energy and blood pressure levels.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is nicknamed “the silent killer” because it typically doesn’t present any symptoms. But does hypertension cause tiredness in some people? Preventive cardiologist Luke Laffin, MD, says that it’s possible but not necessarily likely.

“Everyone’s a little bit different, so I would never discount someone’s symptoms by saying they’re not due to high blood pressure,” Laffin explains, “but it’s pretty difficult to find any major link between feeling fatigued and having elevated blood pressure.”

Hypertension and Fatigue

Feeling Tired? Could It Be Blood Pressure?“Sometimes, when people see that their blood pressure numbers are a little abnormal, they tell themselves, ‘Ah, that must be what’s going on,’ but that’s not necessarily the case,” Laffin notes. “It’s always warranted to have an in-depth discussion with your healthcare provider to figure out: Are these symptoms being driven by your blood pressure? Is it vice versa? Or are they completely unrelated?”

Regularly checking your blood pressure at home is a good idea, but you have to make sure your monitor is well-calibrated. “[At-home monitors are] better than nothing, but the accuracy can be questionable,” Laffin explains. “There’s actually a very standardized process that goes into measuring blood pressure, and it’s very important in making sure that you’re getting an accurate blood pressure reading.”

Low Blood Pressure and Fatigue

“There’s no question [that low blood pressure may cause fatigue], and the data is much stronger,” Laffin confirms. Low blood pressure, or hypotension, may not cause any symptoms. However, it may lead to feelings of fatigue, lethargy, tiredness, and weakness. It may also lead to dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, fast and shallow breathing, and confusion.

Still, Laffin says that fatigue and tiredness are multifactorial, which means they can be due to several factors. “Many of these factors can also be risk factors for hypertension,” Laffin explains, “so it’s important to try to separate these issues and tease them out to get to the bottom of what’s causing your symptoms.”

Taking Care of Your Blood Pressure

l-arginine plusEven if your feelings of fatigue are not due to high blood pressure, it’s important that you take care of it properly. “Chronically elevated blood pressure is a serious medical condition,” Laffin notes, “but the vast majority of people with hypertension don’t have any symptoms whatsoever.”

Leaving hypertension untreated can increase your risk for a heart attack, heart failure, kidney disease, stroke, and other serious issues. To boost your blood pressure health, practice healthy habits like eating healthily, exercising regularly, and taking supplements like L-arginine Plus.

Its ingredients promote circulation, energy levels, blood pressure, cholesterol, and overall heart health. Give your energy and blood pressure health the support they deserve by practicing healthy habits and taking L-arginine Plus.
