Your environment may play a role in your overall health. Do you know how heart healthy is your state? Let’s find out which state is the healthiest.

In addition to personal suffering, heart disease causes financial hardship – over $219 billion dollars per year, according to the CDC. Due to the significant economic impact, the folks at QuoteWizard decided to calculate which states are the most heart-healthy. Moreover, they considered the prevalence of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, and heart disease mortality rate as factors.

Healthy vs. Unhealthy

The leading cause of death in the U.S. and worldwide, for both men and women, is heart disease. Heart health differs throughout the country, with some states having higher rates of pre-existing heart conditions than others. For example, some of the most heart-healthy states are Colorado and Utah due to their low prevalence of risk factors.

QuoteWizard’s findings show that there is a strong correlation between high physical activity, low rates of obesity, and heart-healthy states. For instance, both Colorado and Utah have the highest rate of physical activity, with Colorado also having low obesity rates. In contrast, you have states with high obesity and low activity rates like Kentucky as the least heart-healthy.

Furthermore, the correlation is made stronger with the top heart-healthy states being 28% less obese than their counterparts. According to the National Health Interview Survey, inactivity rates in adults fell from 40.2% to 25.9% between 2005 and 2017. In other words, more adults are increasing their physical activity, which can result in a positive trend for heart health.

Ranking Methodology

In their rankings, QuoteWizard analyzed CDC data, showing the prevalence of various heart health risk factors in each state. These factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, and heart disease mortality rates. Moreover, the overall rankings reflect a composite score between these risk factors, with the most heart-healthy having the highest ranking.

According to the calculations, the top three most heart-healthy states are Colorado, California, and Utah. On the other hand, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Alabama are the least heart-healthy states. In addition, about 33% of Americans have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, significant factors in heart disease.
