High cholesterol can lead to heart disease, heart attack, or stroke. About 30% of Americans struggle with high cholesterol. Whether you’re one of them or not, ignore these cholesterol health myths.

Ignore These Cholesterol Health Myths

1. All Cholesterol is Harmful

This is one of the most misleading myths about cholesterol. In the 80s and 90s, it was widely spread that any and all cholesterol was bad for you. People still have a hard time forgetting that.

With time and more research, doctors and researchers are finding that high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is good for your heart and can actually fight and lower low-density lipoprotein, which leads to heart health issues.

Foods like avocados, fish, eggs, and nuts are high in HDL and are recommended for good heart health. Still, eating too much cholesterol, even good cholesterol, can be harmful to your health.

2. Americans Have the Highest Cholesterol

On TV, movies, news articles, etc, Americans are made to look extremely unhealthy and have the highest cholesterol levels. Ignore these cholesterol myths because they’re simply not true.

While Americans aren’t at the top of the list with the best cholesterol, they aren’t on the bottom either. They’re quite in the middle.

American men ranked 83rd in the world while American women ranked 81st in a 2005 report released by the World Health Organization.

3. Cholesterol is Only Food Related

While most of our cholesterol comes from food, people face cholesterol problems due to genetics. People who have hereditary high cholesterol may eat a healthy diet and exercise but still struggle with high cholesterol levels.

This may make it hard because cholesterol medications may not be as effective. However, it is possible to lower cholesterol despite your genes.

If high cholesterol runs in your family, be sure to talk to your doctor about the best route to prevent high cholesterol levels.

4. Cholesterol Medication is 100% Effective

Unfortunately, a large number of people who take cholesterol medication, like statins, believe that this will solve their problem. However, it’s still necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle to keep cholesterol levels down naturally.

As mentioned above, if high cholesterol runs in your family, do not depend solely on the medication to solve the problem for you. Be proactive with your health.

One of the commonly believed myths about cholesterol is that cholesterol medication is a full-proof plan. If you take your medication, you have nothing to worry about.
